Interview Questions

We decided that we wanted to add dialogue to our piece talking to different people about their past and present crushes along with how they believed their GCSE's went. We feel that this will help us add more to our narrative and enable the audience to understand the massage of our piece.

We conducted and semi-semi-structured interview consisting on three questions, however if we are interested in a topic they talk about we are able to ask additional questions to follow up on what they said.

Here are the questions we asked;

1 - Do you remember your first crush?
(Describe them for us/do you have any fond memories of them?)

2 - Do you have a current crush?
(What are they like?/do you have any fond memories with the both of you?)

3 - How were your GCSE's?
(Do you believe revision went well for you?)

Both Kirsty and I were very excited to film this as we are able to create a vulnerability within those who are involved in the interviews which we believe is something that we would find very hard to fabricate. We want the interview to go alongside the acting of Robyn, Arthur, Isabel and Finlay adding to the ideas of first loves and procrastination.

Location Ideas

Together Kirsty and I came up with a set of potential locations, we then went through them and decided which few we were going to use for filming. We ended up going with my house, Camden Locke, God's Own Junkyard, Little Venice and Regent's Park.

Isabel's Initial Costume Idea

For Isabelles costume we wanted it to be sweet, innocent but have a hint of the unique style that we have chosen for Robyn. We also chose to have the denim jacket in the costume as we want to be able to have a clear way to see that Robyn and Isabelle are the same person.

Finlay's Initial Costume Idea

Finlay's costume has very similar bright colours to Arthurs costume. However, this costume is obviously one for a child meaning that people can immediately identify the age of Finlay. This costume also brings out the indie side of the character linking the the rest of the character showing they they are all the same person.

Arthur's Initial Costume Idea

This is what we had in mind for Arthur's costume, like Robyn the clothes are very casual making it more realistic and relatable to the audience. The colours we chose are very similar to the ideas that we have for Finlays costume which creates a link between the two different time periods showing that they are the same person.
The general feel of the outfit is very alternative and fits in with indie genre, this is the same as Robyns outfit so they two of them fit together perfectly with just their costume.
The bright colours keep with the upbeat nature of the song.
We sill try and keep as close to this costume idea as possible with items from Arthurs wardrobe.

Robyn's Initial Costume Idea

Out initial costume idea for Robyn is very casual, we do not want her to be categorised as massively eccentric or too out there so that our target audience can not relate to her.
I went for very subtle colours such as blues and washed out pink which will make Robyn seem down to earth and relatable to the audience.
We will give her natural make up to make sure that she does not come across too 'fake', but at the same time we want to show her confidence and wearing makeup can promote that (however, not too much).
From the beginning Kirsty and I have had an idea of giving Robyn a signature item of clothing that the audience can identify and associate with her without actually seeing her. We felt that this idea could be utilised some how when it come to our digipak and tour poster.
As I do not have these exact clothes we will try and get the costume as close as possible with Robyns own clothes.

Shooing Schedule - Day 5

Although this looks like a lot to film we are sure that it will not be that stressful to film as we will be in the same place all day with no travelling and having to carry around the equipment.

Shooting Schedule - Day 4

This became day three as we were not able to film at Gods Own Junkyard due to circumstances with Arthur that we were not able to help.
This day of filming will be very jam packed as we will be going to two different locations so we will need to try as hard as we can to stick to the schedule so we do not run over into the break times and tire everyone out. To aid with the amount of filming and travelling that we have to do we have asked our friends Tegan and Chris to help us with the day in order to make sure we stay on time with everything.

Shooting Schedule - Day 2

I created this schedule so we are able to get all the shots done that we want to get and makes sure that we do not over work ourselves and the actors.

Shooting Schedule - Day 1

Due to the fact that we had very limited time to film for day 1 I decided that I should create a time table for exactly when and where we should be and what shots I needed to get during that time.

I feel like this is a very effective way of scheduling the filming days and keeping on time so I have decided that I will produce another one for each of the other filming days.

Production Diary 7

I am really happy with our audition process that we have gone through. Last year I felt that we had to rush process and we unable to properly make a really informed decision about our actors due to the lack of people willing to act in such a cold environment. However, this year we had a very big group of people auditioning and were able to take our time in deciding who to cast.

Robyn
Arthur
On to who we finally decided to cast, we auditioned a group of boys and found that my friend Arthur would be the best for the love interest and that Robyn would be the best option for the artist as we generally based the artist off of her. But, when it came to the children we did not have a choice in who we can choose. We have a very short time window to film and a lack of child relatives so we have decided to use my younger brother Finlay and my cousin Isabel who happened to look very much like the older actors we have cast (whatever looks different I believe is not a problem as we can alter in post-production).
Finlay and Isabel
Overall I have rather enjoyed the audition progress this year compared to last year and also feel that we have been able to choose some really effective actors to perform in our music video.

Final Casting

Animated GIFThis is Robyn Murphy she is our artist, we made the decision to also cast her as our lead role in the music video mainly because she has such an unique look, she was a natural and confident in front of the camera during the audition. She has a very open schedule and is generally perfect for the role. Robyn has a very professional manor when it comes to this production and takes it very seriously which is very good for us as we have confidence that she will turn up on our filming days. She is really enthusiastic and naturally has a vibrant and happy personality which is what we want to promote in our artist and music video. She also has a personal interest in the video as she has experienced a similar love story which her childhood/current crush so she will be able to engage the audience and understand the emotions we want her to portray.

Animated GIFThis is Arthur Goldsworthy Owen after looking at his audition we also decided that he was perfect to play our love interest in he music video as he also has a very stand out look and is reliable due to his open schedule and budding interest and involvement in the music industry.
After seeing Robyn and Arthur met they had instant on-screen and off-screen chemistry which makes him perfect for the choice of her love interest, they were sudden friends and are very excited to work and spend time together while we film making us sure that their on-screen romance will be very professional and more importantly believable.

This is Finlay Wallbanks (left) he plays young Arthur, we chose him as he was one of the most reliable out of the limited options we had for the younger cast (as he is my younger brother), in addition he has the same hair colour as Arthur making him a very good choice.
This is Isabel Moss (right) she was the only person who audition for the younger version of Robyn, she is a intensely keen actress and was very enthusiastic about the filming with us. Although there is a slight problem that they have different hair colour that can easily be changed when editing or explained in the video so we are not too bothered with this.
Young Love GIFFinlay and Isabel have been best friends since they can remember (due to the fact they are cousins) meaning that their on-screen friendship will not appear fake or put on so they audience will respond better to the two, this is a massive upside because it can be really difficult to work with children, getting them to do things that you want them to, so the fact that they are already best friends and like spending time together makes my filming and directing very easy.

Audition - Robyn Murphy

There is not much at all that I can fault about Robyn's audition. At first she seems rather nervous and slightly camera shy however, as she got onto the lip-syncing she became more confident and enthusiastic about the performance. She took on the task in a very professional manor, singing the song all the way through and even singing our song 'Build a Boat' (even though we gave her the choice of singing any song she felt comfortable with), this gave us a better idea of what she would be like if we chose her as our artist. Robyn's facial movements throughout the lip-syncing reminded Kirsty and I of the original artist Maisie Peters making her seem really comfortable and natural in the role and not fake at all.
When it came to the interview Robyn was the most open and enthusiastic out of all the women we auditioned. I really felt her emotion through her story-telling and found myself rooting for her and her 'love story' reminding me of the narrative that Kirsty and I have created for our music video.
Additionally when we came up with the idea for our artist we had Robyn in mind when creating the persona so she fits perfectly but personality wise and style wise.
She also informed us that she has a very open schedule in the times we are planning to film which means that we will be able to use her as much as we need to which is very good for us
Overall we both feel that Robyn is a perfect for the role and is one of the strongest women we have audition (maybe even the strongest) and will definitely be looking into casting her.

Audition - Cailin Brisbourne

When auditioning Cailin we really liked her choice in song which gave us an idea of her personality which I feel suites the ideas we have for our artist. However I felt that she didn't feel very confident in front of the camera so we don't get the nice balance of confidence and awkwardness that we are looking for. Also looking at the other people we auditioned such as Mia, Ella and Robyn I feel that Cailin is not as strong of a character as they are. Both Kirsty and myself feel it is unlikely that we will cast Cailin as our artist

Audition - Claudia Messenger

Similar to Cailin, Claudia does not seem very confident in front of the camera doing lip syncing which is something that our artist will have to be doing a lot of. During the interview Claudia was sweet and calm making it a pleasure for me to audition her. Due to the lack of confidence myself and Kirsty feel that it is unlikely that we will cast her as our artist.

Audition - Yoli Wallbanks

Personally I feel that my audition was not very good. I didn't come across as confident or unique and I did not put across my unique personality which is something we were looking for. I did however feel that my lip syncing skills were actually quite good. However due to the fact that this year I want to focus on the behind the camera and would rather not be the artist in the video.

Audition - Mia O'Brien

Mia was very enthusiastic and passionate during her audition. She gives off an air of confidence which I really like (however may slightly contrast with the idea we have for our artist). She also uses a lot of movement that both Kirsty and I really enjoyed. In her interview she also came across as charismatic, friendly and open as she was happy to go in depth about her personal life with us. As well as the confidence we also feel that Mia's style may be contrasting to what we want our artist to look like. Another downside to Mia is that she is also in another media group making her schedule very difficult to work around. Both Kirsty and myself both think that Mia is a strong contender for our artist.

Audition - Ella Miller

I very much enjoyed auditioning Ella as she was very excited to take part and was very professional. When she was auditioning she was nervous as she usually feels uncomfortable in front of the camera however looking back at the tape Ella seems very natural at the role and comfortable reminding kirsty and I of the original artist Maisie Peters. I also felt that sometimes lip syncing can look fake and unrealistic however we both believe that Ella looks as if she is genuinely performing which. Ella auditioned twice once sitting down and once standing up however when she was standing up she didn't have a lot of movement along with the song which we would like our artist to naturally do so we will take this into account when we decide who to pick as our artist. Ella's personality really came through in the interview. She is bubbly, open and funny which we believe is perfect for the artist. Overall I think Ella is one of the strongest people we auditioned.

Copyright Letter

I emailed Maisie Peters herself to enquire about copyright permission to use her
song for our music video and had a response of the go ahead to use the song.

Kirsty also informally and privately messaged Maisie over Instagram asking for permission and as to whether or not she wants any involvement in the project or what specific things she wants us to put into our video.

Lyric Analysis/Initial Ideas

Overall Build a Boat is a song about a girl trying to revise for her GCSE's however she finds herself unable to because she can't stop thinking and daydreaming about a boy. This is made abundantly clear throughout the whole of the song.
In this analysis though I want to go more in depth and look at the imagery she creates in her song and then how we can portray this in our music video in an effective way that does not take away from the rest of our narrative.

Equipment List

Tripods x2 - We will bring two tripods (both with different capabilities and uses) to make sure we are able to film everything we need to film in the correct way.

Camera - We will use the camera to film and achieve a good quality of footage.

Phones x2 - We will also have both mine and Kirstys Phone to hand so we are about to catch the same footage from a different angels.

Green Screen - We are going to use the green screen so we are able to place our artist over different backgrounds.

Lights - We will use the lights to be able to have a clearer and nicer view of our actors and artist.

Colour Light - We are going to use a colour changing light bulb to play with how it looks on out artist when she is lip-syncing.

Lamp - To use the bulb we will need to place it in a lamp.

Projector - We are going to use the projector to project images of different things into our artist.

White sheet - To get the best result from the projector we will need to use a white sheet behind our artist.

On a less important note when we are out filming we are going to make sure to bring water, snacks, money and rain protective stuff (such as tarp and plastic bags) to stop the actors and equipment from getting wet.

Production Diary 6

Since the last update I feel we have come very far in the beginning of our planning progress. I am feeling really confidence in what we have produced so far and am rather excited to go onto the next part of the main bulk of the planning as I found this part last year to be my favourite part.

I am also feeling rather confident in our artist idea and am very ready to start the casting process for the actors to see who we can find who will have a spark with Robyn on screen.

The Purpose Of Music Videos

There are many different reasons artists decide to create music videos.

One of the main reasons is to promote the single. This means that if an artist releases a single, people are more likely to want to watch it and be excited by it if it comes pared with a music video. Additionally it creates a better more exciting way for people to share the video and means that the views of the song will be better than if the song is released by its self.

Another reason artists and labels decide to create a music video is to promote a whole album and not just a single. Creating a music video give first time listeners a snippet into what the album will be like and if they like it cause them to buy the rest/listen to it. Overall this is a rather effective reason to create a music video as it gives leverage to a whole brand and not just one video. Beyoncey did this when she dropped her album Lemonade she also released the music video 'Hold Up' which promoted the whole album at the same time.

A music video also promotes the artist showing their style and personality to the audience. This is effective as people are more likely to buy into a persons brand if they like their personality. For example Taylor Swift in her video 'Shake It Off' showed a new persona and style of music (from country music to pop) which befitted greatly for her in terms of views.

Finally a music video also is a way that the artist can give more of an understanding to their song to their audience. This is very useful of the more ambiguous songs that leave fans questioning what the song is about.

Overall the reason for making a music video is generally more often than not all of the for mentioned reasons and likely more.

Music Industry Research - How Music Videos Are Made

Sunday, 3 September 2017

Production Diary 5

After having a look over the ideas we had for intertextuality in our music video I have decided that although I really like all of the ideas and really want to incorporate it into our music video somehow.
The Owl And The Pussycat GIFI am hoping that we can do this is a subtle and not overbearing way (such as having a similar moral or adding in a small clip here and there to represent the fairy tales) in order to make sure it does not over shadow that narrative we have but instead adds to the child-likeness of the video.
