Production Diary 4

After looking over the different narrative theories we have decided that we want our music video to be as inclusive and equal as possible, this involves going against the male gaze theory suggested by Mulvey and taking on other theories such John Bergers 'Ways of Seeing' theory creating our characters and artist strong and indapendent
Additionally we have decided that we want our music video to have a clear connection between the lyrics of the song and the visuals we will create there for having it be a narrative based music video in order to really capture what the song is trying to represent, while keeping the audience entertained and content.

Final Music Video Choice

The original 'Build A Boat' video was taken down by the creator so this is the lip sync I created of the song.
After looking long and hard at all the other songs and ideas that we had came up with, we decided on Build A Boat by Maisie Peters.
As a pair both Kirsty and I believe tjhat the idea we have for this video was the strongest out of all. We also felt that we could incorporate the a lot more intresting and new techniques in this video.

Personally I felt that Build A Boat has a lot to work with. There is so much imagery and description involved in the lyrics making it a very strong final decision for our music video.

Production Diary 3

Generally the target audience questionnaire was really helpful in understanding what people want to see in our music video. This is something that we struggled with last year so made sure to do this time round and have a big focus on making sure that we ask all the questions that we wanted to.
Additionally we have been able to adapt our initial pitch in order for our target audience to enjoy the product more, however there was not much that we needed to change drastically.
So far I am very happy with the progress that I have made so far with the research element. Next I am going to look into different theories and theorists that I would like to incorporate or challenge in the music video.

Focus Group - Initial ideas

This focus group was very helpful with allowing Kirsty and myself make some decisions that we were stuck on.

We asked them if they about who we should consider for our casting, they decided that we should consider Robyn - because of her unique style and that her personality shines through in her lip syncing, Mia - because she is extremely confident and draws attention to herself and also Ella - As she was very good at lip syncing and her unique and funny personality really shone through.

We also asked about what we should do for our locations and what they believe links to childhood, they decided on places like childhood homes, beaches and rivers/docks.

Another question was about what institution name they believe is the best that we have come up with. They decided on the two names of 'BeBop Happy' (because it links to a well known phrase) and 'Melody Music' (because it is nice alliteration) as the two best ones.

As Kirsty and myself were struggling with making a decision of what we should name our artist we asked our focus group what they prefer. They narrowed it down to three names 'Maisie', 'Robyn Murphy' and 'Robyn'.

Although we had already decided on the style we want for our artist we still asked what they thought would be the best style for her. They said things like casual clothing, bohemian and lots of denim.

Finally we asked then about our institution logo design wondering what typical images they would see on a music logo and what colours. The group said that the images they would expect to see are birds (linking with Robyn's name) and music notes (linking with music). They also decided that pastil colours are what they would expect to see in our logo.

Overall this focus group really helped us understand more about our decisions for our institution and artist.

It has a cool non-stop camera roll thingy
3I like this music video because it presents everything that i think an indie music video should have. There is a beautiful heartbreaking narrative that is clearly shown to the audience through the eyes of the main character. I feel that the shots are beautiful and the overall quality of the video and song are impeccable. In addition the sing and the Video like very well together making this videos one of my favourites.
4It's got a good message and the narrative is loosely linked to the lyrics
5i like the use of drawn signs and story line
6I don't have a favourite indie music video.
7it makes really good use of landscape shots, filters, colour correction etc and is a bit experimental in its use of this. i really like how it gives you an insight into the experience of being in the band and on tour and it makes you feel closer to the band in seeing behind the scenes shots of them that don't seem really staged or contrived/seem authentic. the way the shots are put together go well with the music too without seeming too timed or planned. i however don't like the sexualised images of the woman as it seems a bit weird next to shots of the band - kind of like a comment about groupies or being able to get girls if you're famous which just seems a bit creepy to me. if the video had stuck to shots of the band and fans it would have been perfect
8It is completely different to the typical music video that is presented it defies all typical conventions .
9The simplicity of shots, looks really natural and focuses on letting the song do the talking
10The music video has a good story line which relates directly to the lyrics in the song. It is like you are watching a film condensed into 4 and a half minutes.

1It doesn’t bother me too much, Although it can be a bit more engaging
2Trying to hard
3It adds interest to the video and can explain the video's purpose/suit the theme
4I like this feature as it brings a level of uniqueness to the video making me more intrigued to watch it/carry on watching it. In addition it adds another level to the narrative of the story making the whole thing make more sense.
5It's cool
6its not bad but i'd rather with out it
7Because it stops me from making my own interpretation of the music video and/or will confused.
8I have no real opinion on it
9sometimes it's just annoying because you want to hear the song straight away and not have to sit through dialogue or skip forwards. it is cool sometimes if it fits in with an interesting or original plot in the music video that relates to the song. if it's unrelated or a bit weird it can be off-putting
10It takes away from he narrative presented for the audience.

After looking over the results we were able to come to a decision on some of the ideas that we did not have much of an opinion on and also confirm some choices that we had already made.
One example of this is that people chose mostly the colours light blue, purple and pink which we decide will be the colour scheme for our video and ancillary products.
